At our workshop in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we make custom floating frames for canvases, paintings and contemporary artworks.

A floating frame, also called a tray frame, leaves a small visible gap between the artwork and the frame. This creates depth and makes the canvas appear to float inside the structure. It is especially suitable for stretched canvases, abstract painting, modern art and works that benefit from a clean, elegant presentation.

What is a floating frame?

Unlike a traditional frame, a floating frame does not cover the edges of the artwork. The canvas sits inside the frame with an even gap around it. This shadow line allows the complete painting to remain visible and creates a lighter, contemporary presentation.

The gap around the artwork

The visible gap is one of the most important characteristics of a floating frame. It must be even on all four sides. Its width can be adapted to the size of the work, the depth of the stretcher, the style of the painting and the desired effect. A subtle gap often suits a small piece; a larger canvas may need a wider shadow line for balanced proportions.

Frames for already stretched works

If your painting is already on a stretcher frame, we can make the outer frame to fit. We check the exact width, height and depth; whether the canvas is square; the condition of the sides; its weight; and the appropriate fixing system.

If the canvas is still rolled, we can also make the stretcher frame, stretch the fabric and then produce the floating frame so the work is completely finished and ready to hang.

Frames for canvases bought online

For an unframed or rolled canvas, we can carry out the complete process: inspect and measure the fabric, make a custom stretcher frame, stretch it correctly, make the floating frame and add the hanging system.

Frames for commissioned paintings

When a painting is still being created, the frame finish can be considered from the beginning alongside the palette, final size, intended space, interior style and stretcher depth. This helps achieve a coherent relationship between the painting, frame and room.

How to request a quotation

Send a photograph of the artwork, its exact width and height, the number of frames and the approximate date required. If you cannot measure it precisely, bring it to our Las Palmas workshop so we can inspect it and recommend the most suitable frame and gap.
