A modern living room does not need many artworks. It needs the right relationship between the wall, furniture, light and the work itself. Start with proportion and presence before trying to match colours.
1. Start with the wall, not the palette
Measure the usable wall and the furniture below it. Above a sofa, a total artwork width of roughly 60–75% of the sofa is a useful starting point.

2. Modern art does not have to match everything
Repeat one or two tones if they help the connection, then allow contrast. A room becomes more personal when the artwork has its own identity.
3. In a large room, scale often matters more than quantity
One substantial painting can organise a broad wall and reduce visual clutter. It gives the surface and composition enough space to be read.

4. Choosing colour
Neutral rooms can take deep blue, green, rust, graphite or a restrained warm accent. Rooms with wood benefit from colours that have depth rather than flat saturation.

5. Abstract or figurative?
Abstract work can amplify material, rhythm and atmosphere. Figurative art or a landscape can anchor the room in a place or story. A contemporary interior can support either.

6. Texture changes more than a screen can show
Relief, gloss, transparent layers and brushwork react to moving daylight. View an original from different angles before deciding whenever possible.
7. The frame changes the character
A floating frame creates a clean border around the canvas; a darker frame adds graphic structure, while natural wood can connect the work with furniture and flooring.
8. Hanging height matters
Above a sofa, keep the lower edge approximately 15–25 cm above the back in most rooms. The painting and furniture should read as one composition.
9. Common mistakes
- Buying before measuring.
- Choosing a work that is too small.
- Hanging it close to the ceiling.
- Matching every colour literally.
- Judging texture only from a phone screen.
10. If no existing size fits
A commissioned painting can solve an unusual wall. We can also visualise an available work from a photograph of the room. For selected paintings in Gran Canaria, free local delivery and in-home fitting are available.
